I was chatting with a friend a few days ago regarding the kind of Christianity we received in Malawi. Is it that we received a true Gospel and we have changed it in the process or is it that we received a wrong gospel? He did not mince words in his response but stated that we received a wrong gospel altogether. A Gospel that was colored with Western culture and that condemned the African culture and its values.
Well, Christianity has been in Malawi for quite some decades. It has to come out from the craddle and wrestle with some of the issues that face the Nation - a Nation endowed with a lot of natural wealth be it precious stones, and a lot more natural resources. A Nation that has big brains who have made contributions elsewhere in the world. Christianity is represented by churches. The question that I have is: Are churches answering the needs of the common Malawian? Are churches in Malawi wrestling with issues that would change the spiritual landscape of the nation and bring meaningful change?
I think some of the big churches are more concerned about being politically correct than being spiritually positioned. The reality is that we still have challenges of tribalism, regionalism which we need to deal with which comes with real discipleship.
